Inch Autos visual guide to halogen, projector, xenon HID, factory LED and matrix LED headlight types

How to identify your headlights

Do not identify headlights by the colour of their light. Halogen, xenon and LED can all look white or blue-white. Check the headlight design, original bulb code or manufacturer information instead.

Standard halogen

Reflector-style units commonly use replaceable bulbs such as H4, H7 or H1. Exact fitment depends on the vehicle.

Halogen projector

Often has a round lens but can still use ordinary halogen bulbs. A projector lens alone does not establish whether a headlight is halogen, xenon or LED.

Xenon / HID

Uses specific HID bulbs and electrical equipment such as ballasts. Examples include D1S, D2S, D3S and D5S; compatibility must be checked.

Factory LED and Matrix LED

These use dedicated LED assemblies or modules rather than conventional halogen bulbs for their LED functions. Some vehicles have mixed halogen and LED functions.

Still not sure?

Send Inch Autos a clear photograph of the complete headlight assembly, plus your vehicle make, model and year. We can help you identify the correct lighting option.

Important: The guide illustrates common headlight designs; appearance alone is not definitive. LED daytime-running-light strips do not necessarily mean the main headlight is LED. Always verify the fitted bulb or original equipment specification before ordering.
